How Many HSC Practice Papers Should You Complete Before the Exams?

The 2026 HSC written exams begin on Tuesday 13 October. NSW Government With exams approaching, it is tempting to measure your preparation by how many papers you finish. But one paper that you complete, mark and learn from can be more useful than several you rush through.

So, how many should you aim for? As a practical starting point, try two or three full papers for each subject before its exam, alongside shorter sessions focused on your weaker areas. This is a flexible target. The right number depends on your timetable, how much you have already practised and the time you need to review your answers.

Why two or three papers can help

Your first paper shows you where you stand. Notice which questions take too long, what you leave unfinished and which topics you need to revisit.

Use the second paper to test a change. You might spend less time on multiple-choice questions, plan extended responses more clearly or show more working in maths.

By the third paper, you can check whether that change helped and practise staying focused for the length of the exam. If you have time for more, give each one a purpose. Completing extra papers is only useful if you act on what they reveal.

What if you cannot fit in that many?

Don’t rush through several full papers just to reach a number. If time is limited, one carefully reviewed full paper per subject is a useful place to start. Then practise selected questions from the areas where you lost marks.

Check your personal HSC timetable and give earlier exams the attention they need. If two subjects are close together, make time for both rather than leaving one until the last minute.

How to make each paper count

1. Practise under exam conditions. Set aside the time allowed for the paper, put your notes away and work through it as you would on exam day. This will show you how well you manage your time across the whole paper.
2. Mark it honestly. Compare your responses with the marking criteria. Where available, read marker feedback to understand where you could improve. NESA’s HSC exam paper packs include past papers, marking guidelines and feedback.
3. Keep a short error list. Was the problem a knowledge gap, a misread question, an unclear explanation or time pressure? Your answer tells you what to study next.
4. Try difficult questions again. Review the relevant content, then redo the question without looking at the answer. Check whether you can apply what you learned in your next paper.

Balance full papers with focused practice

You don’t need to complete a full paper every time you study. A shorter session of calculations, short-answer questions or essay plans may be the best way to work on a particular weakness.

If you know the content but run out of time, practise timed sections. If one topic keeps costing you marks, work through questions on that topic before attempting another full paper.

What should you do in the final days?

Focus on the mistakes you can still fix. Review your error list, revisit key ideas and try a few relevant questions. If you have already completed several full papers, you do not need to squeeze in another one the night before an exam. Leave time to rest and arrive ready to think clearly.
